Fling Training: into the business end

Time for a quick blog as I wait for my breakfast to digest before my last run of the week. Into the last 4 weeks of training for the fling before we hit taper time. The plan is to up the weekly mileage to about 100 over these last weeks and concentrate on some good long runs while cutting back a bit on the speedier stuff (ha ha as if there has been a huge amount of speedwork).

This week has been slightly wonky with the easter weekend changing the work pattern. However i’m sitting on 116km for the week, so after todays planned 50km to Conic hill and back I should hit the magic 160km. Doesn’t sound as exciting in km as it does in miles, does it? Main sessions of note were the gym bunny session of double spin/body pump at Virgin Milngavie. I’m really enjoying beasting myself at Kevin Henderson’s spin classes again then following it up with a bit of strength stuff at body pump. It was a kevin run session on tuesday with Hill reps followed by 800s which we did at alternating pace 5km pace/half mara pace roughly. The rest of the weeks runs were all commutes apart from the Good friday run with Joe who took me round a lovely 35km loop from Campsie Glen over Cort-ma Law to Carron Valley reservoir.

One of those runs that has a good mix of everything. Mostly typical Campsies fun boggy hill running, but some nice trails around the reservoir and a wee bit of road to wake the legs up as well.

For next weekends long run the plan is to run from my house to Ben Lomond maybe 27 miles, then as a wee finisher run up and down Ben Lomond then stagger back to Balmaha to find a bus home. Following weekend the plan is to enter the Great Tartan Skidaddle, which is a newish race from Inversnaid to Callander.  Looks like a nice route.  However this may be slightly scuppered as I have just found out I have to go into hospital for an Angiogram on thursday 7th for a 2 year check on my aneurysm.  Hopefully I should be OK to run with a days recovery, at least I will be well tapered as I will be lying down all day thursday!
